Seawater sampling varies during the cruise but salts, oxygens, & chlorophylls are drawn on virtually all CTD-rosette hydrographic stations - typically 75 on Summer & Fall cruises, 104 on Winter & Spring. Nutrient samples are taken on 75 stations on southern Lines 93.3 through 76.7. Nutrient samples may be taken on Line 73, analyst time and reagents-permitting, totalling ~82 stations.
Twenty-four 10L bottles are available on the rosette but, traditionally, 20 bottle depths are targeted during a 515m cast. Sampling depths in the upper 200m vary (3 cast 'types') based on the depth of the CTD fluorescence peak (chlorophyll max) & mixed layer. Additional bottles and depths are often added for the daily primary productivity incubation experiments whose target depths are determined by Secchi & chl-max depths. NCOG, DIC/pH, and CCE-LTER samples plus ancillary assays often require extra bottles for adequate seawater.
In addition to the specific stations indicated in the matrix, 18 prodo (3 samples from 6 depths) & 4 NCOG samples (1 sample from 10m, chl-max, 170m, 515m) are taken on daily prodo stations. These are noontime primary productivity 14C uptake incubation experiments performed on southern Lines 93.3 - 76.7, typically 15 per cruise.
On lines north of Line 76.7, seawater sampling, if performed, is reduced to 12-10L bottles on 515m casts since analytical personnel are reduced.
On all stations with bottom depths less than 500m, the terminal depth is ~10m from bottom so the number of bottle depths vary. When bottom depth is 75m or less, an additional 5m bottle is tripped.
DIC stations listed with an "X" are typically 8-10 samples from 8 depths. Otherwise, the number listed, between 1 to 3, are the number of DIC/pH samples collected.
